Pinup History X: Enoch Bolles & George Quaintance

By the 1930s the pinup had emerged as an American icon, appearing on the cover of pulp magazines, dime-store novels and saucy calendars across the country. Multiple artists made their careers painting the pinup in all her splendor, imagining every possible situation that could leave a woman standing in her stockings, busting out of her bathing suit, or wearing little more than a tempting smirk. Two of the earliest artists who set the standard for decades to come were Enoch Bolles and George Quaintance.Enoch Bolles was one of the first widely circulated pinup artists and his legacy has come to define the genre. A classically trained illustrator, Bolles’ first pinups graced the cover of joke books like Judge and Puck.

Everything’s Coming up Roses this Spring!

If there is any one trend that we can guarantee to make an appearance come spring, floral is it.  There is hardly a spring season that goes by without a runway or two devoted to the garden motif and for Spring 2011 that runway was D&G’s.  Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana entered the Garden of Eden this spring with vintage-inspired floral prints that bloomed across a wide array of maxi dresses, pinafores, tanks and the odd pair of short shorts.  Even though D&G wasn’t the only show that focused on florals (Erdem, Jil Sander and Etro all planted their own gardens this spring as well), their’s was by far the most romantic and most themed of the lot.  We found a quite a few floral prints already in bloom for spring, all for under $150.

Scrimp, Spend, Splurge – Flared ’70s-Style Jeans

We equate our relationship with our skinny jeans to the one we have with our long-term boyfriend.  We’ve been wearing skinnies for as long as we’ve been dating our boyfriend meaning we’re about as comfortable in them (and with him) as one could ever hope to be and we know exactly how to wear them (or in our boyfriend’s case how to spend a Friday night with him).  So when the Spring 2011 runways (like Derek Lam, above centre, whose stretch denim flared trouser jeans run $550) saw an explosion of flared, 1970s-inspired jeans, our relationship with denim suddenly went from predictable and safe to exciting and slightly intimidating.  Switching from skinnies to wide legs is like having a whole new boyfriend, meaning the relationship possibilities are endless!  And while we’re slightly frightened by the prospect of breaking in a new style of jeans (taming a new boyfriend can be equally as challenging), we thought we would look to the young ladies of Hollywood for style suggestions on how to wear the new wider leg jean for Spring 2011.  Already this year both Kate Hudson and Diane Kruger have been spotted wearing flared jeans and both have figured out the perfect length – right to the ground, almost completely covering your shoe.  Which brings us to the question of what shoes to wear with your new wider leg jeans?  A heel is a must and a heel with a platform is even better. And even though both Kate and Diane left their tops untucked, we’re much bigger fans of the tucked in shirt/wide leg jeans combo as seen at Derek Lam (don’t forget the skinny belt!).

1) SCRIMP: Wide leg trouser jeans – $79.50 at Gap ($89.50 in Canada) Gap has come out with quite a wide selection of wide leg jeans and pants for spring but our favorite so far are their wide leg trouser jeans with the front seam detail.

2) SPEND: Paige Premium “Bentley” wide leg jeans – $158 at Neiman Marcus When it comes to any style of jeans, we always say to get one pair in a solid dark wash because you can always dress up this pair the best (meaning it looks less casual than a pair of faded jeans).  That’s why Paige’s “Bentley” wide leg jeans in Lahaina wash are on our must-have list for spring.

3) SPLURGE: Current/Elliott “Low Bell” jeans – $238 at OTTE Current/Elliott’s “Low Bell” jeans are very similar to the pair that Diane Kruger wore on February 5th while out with her boyfriend Joshua Jackson.  A light wash with only a slight fade to them is the ideal pair for the spring (or any day in Los Angeles).

Is There Really Such a Thing as a Pregnant Glow?

Perhaps this is what they mean by a pregnancy glow: Victoria Beckham (who graces our March cover!) apparently credits her fourth pregnancy with doing more to improve her skin than any treatment or product ever has. Lucky her—plenty of women experience just the opposite. The rush of new hormones causes breakouts, spider veins, and even melasma (a nice word for unsightly discoloration). Here, a few other myths and truths of pregnancy beauty.

Your hair gets thicker. This one is true—with a significant “but.” Normally your hair alternates between an active growing phase a resting phase. Dur
